Poppy's Bites and Barrels features a modern twist on southern classic food and features unique cocktails, bourbon, wine, and beer.

Named after Corporal Ben DeFonce aka Poppy who passed away in September of 2021 and the poppy flower. The red poppy is a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I to honor those who served and died for our country in all wars.

Poppy’s Bites and Barrels serves as a living memorial to honor veterans who served this country as well as civilians that want to learn more about the men and women who protect this nation.

Meet Poppy

Benjamin Anthony DeFonce was born in Harrison NY on March 23, 1931.  He attended Harrison Public Schools and graduated from Harrison High School Class of 1950 where he excelled in sports playing football, basketball and baseball.  He attended the University of Miami to play football but just 2 weeks after his arrival, he heard the call to service and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.

After Boot Camp at Paris Island, SC he was stationed at Camp Pendleton before being sent to the front lines with the 3rd Battalion, 7thMarine Regiment to fight in the Korean War.  Mr. DeFonce fought valiantly at Heartbreak Ridge where he was critically wounded trying to give help and support to his fellow marines and was injured numerous times.  Due to his bravery, he was awarded 2 purple hearts, the Korean service medal with a bronze star and the United Nations service medal and given the rank of corporal upon his medical discharge.
